Before and After #11: Hallway

We have a new hallway!

(The hallway doesn't photograph very well because it's so narrow, but take my word for it, it looks nice.  Today I also learned that 1) I don't know how to photograph lights, on or off; and 2) I don't know how to photograph mirrors without getting my reflection in them.)

I love how the marble, brick, and wood floors come together in this corner.

As always, we started with the worst part, scraping off the popcorn ceiling.  Then we removed the cork lining along one wall (you may remember from the guest bedroom post that the previous owners lined the walls in the back of the house with cork for reasons we can only guess at) and re-plastered over it to make the walls smooth and even.  Then up went the trim and paint (Martha Stewart's Chinchilla).

Two years ago we tore up the carpet to find underneath a mixture of hardwood planks and particle board.  This month we finally replaced it all with brick flooring* in a herringbone pattern.  This floor may be my new favorite thing in the house.

Then we replaced all the cheap hollow-core doors and knobs with proper solid wood doors and new hardware.*

We replaced this single ceiling fan/light with three new schoolhouse light fixtures.

We decided to keep this oddly shaped little knick-knack shelf on the corner - it houses books and weird objects, like most surfaces in our house.

My single favorite image in the whole house
Then I added a gallery wall of gold and silver frames.  I had been collecting new and antique frames in anticipation of this project, not to mention going through hundreds and hundreds of family photos to find the best ones.

I also added some non-photo items, like a floor plan of our house and an unusually sobering fortune cookie message.  And I made silhouettes of our family (see also my dogs and my friends).  But they don't come close to the beautiful pair of silhouettes Suzan gave me last Christmas.

I also hung up this antique mirror I got on Craigslist.

Ta da! I know it's just a tiny hallway, but I love it.

*The house came with a mix of solid wood doors with lovely antique door knobs and cheap, hollow-core doors with cheap door knobs.  I tried to get reproduction antique crystal knobs to match the old ones, but for various reasons that didn't work out, so Dev found some nice oil-rubbed bronze handles instead.

  1. It may be small, but it’s your hallway. So I say go and do whatever makes your heart sing! As for the hallway itself, I love how the doors and tiles sort of match up, and the time pattern is certainly nice. The corner shelf is certainly a nice touch and a great way to use that space. Have a good one!
