Winter Vegetables

Our winter vegetable garden did wonderfully this year! Much better, in fact, than our summer garden - the biggest enemies to gardening here are heat and drought, so cool season vegetables are the way to go.

Baby broccoli

Poor little Brussels sprouts never had a chance.

We grew spinach, kale, many different kinds of lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, radishes, and beets.  The radishes were the best I've ever eaten.  We ate tons of spinach, lettuce, kale, and beets, but before we could harvest the still-maturing broccoli, cauliflower, and sprouts, the chickens ate all of it, as well as what was left of the lettuce.

Before we plant the summer vegetables, Dev is going to build me a little chicken fence, like this one I found on Pinterest.  Not only will it protect the new vegetables, but I think it will be an attractive way to carve out a distinct vegetable gardening zone and help break up the yard.

In the meantime, the yard is in full spring mode, every morning when I go outside there's something new going on, it's very exciting.

Beet greens smoothie.
