(Okay, this is obviously not October - I got way behind posting these, but I'm still labeling them with the month where they belong in case I want to refer back to them again next year.)
For math we learned about time and for programming, we kept working with Scratch. Beatrice has also been enjoying a computer game Travis recommended for her, Counting Kingdom (it's more fun than it sounds).
For science, we learned about force, motion, and energy. This was humbling because I realized things like, "I don't really remember how simple machines work," and "it's really hard to explain the concept of 'energy.'"
Luckily I found some good experiments online and some in this book from the library. Two other books we liked from the library were Energy Makes Things Happen and Forces Make Things Move. (This whole series is really good - last month we used What Is the World Made Of? about matter, too.)
We also took a field trip to Kidspace's physics garden to learn about simple machines, and another trip to a playground to explore physics concepts as they relate to things like slides and swings.
For history/literature, we worked on world geography. I asked Beatrice to put together a world map puzzle, then to use it to plan a round-the-world trip to three destinations (though she wound up choosing four), then to explain how she would get from place to place, how long it would take, and what she would do when she got there.
She chose to fly from Los Angeles to Greenland, where she and Arthur would play with puffins; then she wanted to take a boat to France, then get on a train to go to China to feed bamboo to pandas; then she wanted to fly to Antarctica to "communicate with penguins;" then she wanted to fly to Chile to visit Aunt Maureen again; then home.
