Happy Half-Birthday, William!

I'm 18 months old, AMA.
Today Baby William turned 18 months old, and it seemed like a good time to check in with him. These past six months have been big ones for William.

He is still less talkative than his siblings, but he does say about a dozen words now, including "dog," "ball," "mama," "dada," "chicken," "duck," "cookie," and "cheese."

He gently tugs on his own hair to soothe himself before sleep.
When he's happy or excited about something, he shouts "Go! Go!" When he's upset, he says "no," like most toddlers, but instead of shouting it obstinately, he says it quietly and ruefully, while shaking his head: "Oh no. Oh no, no, no."

He LOVES balls, far more than any other toy. He is so obsessed with them that he will become hysterical if he sees one he can't have - we can't even pass a spherical watermelon or cantaloupe in the grocery store without him shouting "Ball! Ball!"

Other than balls, he likes cars, trains, and blocks, and he adores both the dogs and the chickens. He loves going to the beach and sitting in shallow pools of water.

He's pretty well-coordinated for his age - he can catch, throw, and kick, and Aunt Mina saw him take a step or two along a log lying like a balance beam on the beach.

One of his jokes - pulling his shirt up over his head.
He's still revealing his personality to us, but so far I'd say he is cheerful, friendly, and funny. He loves telling jokes. He is happy and easy-going almost all the time, but he can be stubborn, single-minded, paranoid, and very possessive about his belongings.  He is observant, curious, and while he is joyful, he is serious, too. He is just starting to "discover" his siblings and now he loves hugging them, play-tackling them (Arthur hates this), or making them laugh. Neither as impulsive as Beatrice nor as fussy as Arthur, William seems to have a pretty healthy sense of appropriate levels of risk.

I'm excited to get to know him better as the year continues on ...

On the road to toddlerhood!

Summer RV Vacation

Mina is on a roll! After organizing our family ski trip last winter, she suggested we try a summer RV trip. So last week we all rented two RVs in Sonoma and drove them up the California coast to Humboldt: Mina, James, Julie, Dev, Rosemary, Louis, Beatrice, Arthur, William, and me, plus Sancho.

Despite a somewhat rocky start after our family's RV broke down outside of the Grandfather Tree near Garberville, we had an excellent time, first at Albee Creek Campground, then farther north at Patrick's Point.

On the way to Humboldt we stopped so the kids could gather some pieces of beach glass.

Albee Creek was probably the nicest campground I've seen. Our site even had this giant redwood stump for the kids (and adults) to play in.

The kids could also walk down to the creek from the camp site.

We hiked through the giant redwoods and went swimming in the creek.

The kids used two long branches to make a double see-saw.

A family of five deer walked through our campsite one morning.

Our friend Richard met us on the beach and let the kids try out his paddleboard.

The following day we went for another hike and then an afternoon swim in the Eel River.

We went looking for clams at the beach - without success, but Louis really enjoyed using the "clam gun" all the same.

The beach at Patrick's Point was gorgeous, though too rough for swimming - but James led the kids in wading and building a very elaborate sand castle (designed by Louis, of course).

We're already looking forward to more trips in the future ...
