Happy Father's Day!
Nothing cracks up Beatrice quite so hard as Dev shouting Jon Voight lines at her from "Runaway Train" (1985).
Beatrice's First Bike Trip
Today we celebrated Amy and Evan's birthdays with a bike trip from El Segundo to Hermosa Pier (about 5.5 miles each way) followed by a beach picnic.
Beatrice loved riding with her father along the beach but being forced to wear a helmet (even a cute helmet with baby chicks on it) drove her to distraction. She became so enraged that she actually tore out the interior lining in her frantic attempts to get it off her head. The only thing that would keep her from crying the entire way, Dev said, was for him to ride at top speed without slowing down or stopping at all - if he did that, she would be cheered up and distracted enough to tolerate the helmet. But when he slowed down, she had a fit.
At least she calmed down enough to enjoy a beach picnic with her friends Jack and Miller, to play in the ocean, and to steal all the snacks she could get her hands on.

Splash Pad
Later this afternoon I tried to recreate some of the fun with the hose in our backyard.

Beatrice, Month Twelve
Riding tiny cars with Rosemary in Chicago.
Just in time for B's first birthday, she learned her first word: "dog." She also learned to point and to wave, and she uses both of these skills primarily to point to and wave at every dog she sees. Her father and grandparents claim she knows other words (like "dada," "hi," and "okay") but "dog" is the only one she uses consistently and correctly every day.
Beatrice waving from the Griffith Park carousel.
In every way Beatrice is becoming so much smarter and more involved in her world: she helps dress herself, and the other day she even picked up her own hair comb and made three practiced strokes through her own hair just perfectly.
Beatrice's love affair with food continues - some of her recent favorites include smoked sturgeon, Thai curry chicken, collard greens, and cupcakes. In fact, we still haven't found anything she won't eat. Despite that, she's still very small - 10th percentile in weight and barely 25th in height, according to her most recent exam. But she's very strong, active, agile, and healthy - she packs a lot of punch into that small package.
Beatrice is ferocious.

Happy Birthday Beatrice!
Baby Beatrice is one! And to celebrate her first full trip around the sun we had a big party for all her friends, relatives, and admirers.
